(EnviroNews Utah) – At the Rally to Restore Sanity to Government, Matt Pacenza, Policy Director at HEAL Utah denounced the Herbert Administration’s new policy on nuclear waste before a crowd of outraged protestors.

The decision has taken much heat from citizens and activists alike as it overturns Utah’s 2005 policy signed into law by former Governor John Huntsman that banned hotter blended radioactive waste from nuclear power plants from being stored in Utah’s West Desert.

To a chorus of angry boo’s, Pacenza went on to explain to the crowd how this new policy also greatly increases the overall amount of radioactive material being stored in our state and “cements Utah as THE dumpling ground for the nation’s nuclear waste problem”.

The multibillion dollar public corporation Energy Solutions has been lobbying hard for years to achieve this opportunity, as well as for the opportunity to import foreign waste for storage just 80 miles west of Salt Lake City. Observing the track record of Utah’s heavily pro-industry Governor, it seems likely that Energy Solutions will likely get their way on this radioactively hot issue.
